Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery Fellowship Program

The Department of Neurosurgery is pleased to offer 12 months of enfolded PGY-7 or post-neurosurgery residency training in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, located at the Sponsoring Institution, Banner University Medical Center – Tucson Campus. The program is designed to provide a qualified neurological surgeon with experience and expertise in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of functional and movement disorders not considered part of routine residency training.

The fellowship is structured to promote further acquisition of knowledge and skills in the subspecialty, with emphasis on framed and frameless stereotactic systems, stereotactic radiosurgery, electrical recording, and electrical stimulation for localization and treatment of target structures in the central and peripheral nervous system (stereotactic neurosurgery) and the surgical alteration of the nervous system (either by ablation or augmentation) to treat neurological diseases such as movement disorders, epilepsy, chronic pain, degenerative diseases, neurological injuries, and psychiatric disorders (functional neurosurgery).

This experience in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery is under the direction of specified clinical faculty, providing the trainee with organized, comprehensive, supervised, full-time educational exposure in the field of stereotactic, functional, and movement disorder neurosurgery. Responsibilities will be centered on clinical evaluation, diagnosis, performance of surgical procedures, and integration of non-operative and surgical therapies in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Clinical, anatomic, biomechanical, and neuroscience research also constitute an integral component of this educational experience. Provision is made for the successful completion of research projects.
